Enchanted Mists

The howls woke Maeve; long, drawn-out mournful moans that made the hairs on her arms stand up straight and goosebumps pebble up and down her bare arms. She opened her eyes, surprised she’d slept at all with those unknown terrors keeping up noise throughout the night. There was something about those howls she could not explain, something that made her want to leave, return to the odd boat, and take her chances with the eels. The eels who had been silent throughout their sea journey.

Maeve rolled on her side, putting her back to the rear wall of the shallow cave they’d discovered a few miles off the coast. Sandrine had pressed forward relentlessly the evening before, determined to find a hiding place before the night terrors took over. Once they’d arrived, Sandrine told Maeve to sleep, while Caspian and the pirate brothers took turns keeping watch. Maeve had meant to wake up earlier and take a turn at keeping watch, but her sleep was dreamless and she slept later than she intended.

Her head felt dull and her muscles sore. She rose gingerly, shaking the stiffness out of her arms and legs. When she turned around, Imer was staring at her. He’d leaned up casually against the entrance to the cave, arms crossed, dark hair covered with his hat and one boot tapping against stone as he waited. Past him, she had a view of the gray mist, which hung like a cloud suspended in the air, so thick it was impossible to tell where the mist ended and the sea began. She shuddered, both at the look in Imer’s dark eyes and the unfriendliness of the mountains.

Caspian walked over to Maeve, blocking Imer’s view. A spark of irritation flared, but when Maeve met his eyes, something inside of her relaxed. Caspian was safe; she trusted him, but she also did not understand why she felt conflicted. Her eyes flickered ever so briefly back to Imer, but he’d turned to address his brother, their low tones adding warmth to the coolness of the cave.

Caspian touched her arm briefly. “Are you ready?”

Maeve shrugged, then crossed her arms. “Yesterday, when we were leaving the boat, Imer said something about Carn, my homeland. I need to talk to him. I want to know what he knows about my land of birth, my people.”

Caspian scrubbed a hand over his stubble, his jaw set tight. “After what I told you last night, you still want to speak with them?”

Maeve blinked, realizing he was forcing her to choose a side. “There is no harm in talking to a pirate. Remember why we’re here—to gain knowledge, not hold on to old grudges. If he knows something about Carn, something that might help me, I need to find out what it is.”

Caspian’s expression gentled in light of her rebuke. “Forgive me if I am overprotective of you. I took my eyes off you once, and the fae stepped in and did this to you.” He gestured to the collar.
